"You know quite well, deep within you, that there is only a single magic, a single power, a single salvation...and that is called loving.
Well then, love your suffering.
Do not resist it, do not flee from it.
It is only your aversion to it that hurts, nothing else.
"

Why do I hitchhike?
- To explore the planet and its people.
- To break down social boundaries.
- Rather than reading or hearing inspiring stories; to live the inspiration!
- To cultivate bravery and daring.
- To revive trust and communication between strangers.
- To let go of preconceptions and judgements about what life and people are like.
- To open myself to the universe and see what comes up to meet me!
- To travel cheaply and lightly across large distances.
- To take advantage of the empty seats in vehicles already traveling the direction I'm going.
- To prove that people are essentially caring, hospitable, and generous; and to meet such folks, as they are the ones who stop!
- To see how other people live and think; when you pick up a hitchhiker, you're obliged to talk with them and this can induce thoughtfully heady dialogue and allow you to be creative with the lexicon and body language!
- To ride in the front of trucks and absorb the extraordinary panoramic view!
- To ride in the back of pick-ups and feel the wind slap my face and the sun bear down like liquid fire on my skin!
- To make unlikely friends.
- To befriend police and observe federal policy.
- To stream against the flow, and choose to make friends with strangers despite repeated warnings and concerns rooted in fear and distrust.
- The bus stinks, the plane expands my carbon footprint, and the train (in North America at least) is shoddy and expensive!
- To play with chance + luck + faith.
- To meet other hitchhikers and open thinkers.
- To meet the most kind-hearted and generous people in the world!
- To meet those who really do think of others first and actually put this into practice in their own lives.
- To build community + trust + sharing + growth + love.
- To open my heart.
- To hear some great new music.
- To catch a glimpse of another person's world and what they're creating for themselves...if it is truth based and righteous...to emulate and really learn from their beautiful example.
- To observe the vast plethora of people who stop for a hitchhiker; to let go of stereotypes and false notions.
- To live life and not let life live me.
- To open peoples minds and show them that hitchhikers, indeed "strangers" can be friendly and fun and kind and sincere.
- To make such a good impression so as to inspire drivers to stop again for hikers in the future.
- In true Bene Gesserit style, to not for one second give into fear, fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. To face my fear, permit it to pass over me and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
